Kelsey Kolin (Central '13)
Kelsey Kolin is a 2013 graduate of Walled Lake Central HS. While at Central, she was a member of the ski team, yearbook club, and attended Oakland Schools Technical Center South West (OSTC-SW) participating in both, the culinary and nursing programs.
Through OSTC, she solidified her passion for nursing, graduated with honors from the National Technical Honor Society, was a State Qualifier for HOSA - Future Health Professionals and passed her state exam as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). After becoming a CNA, she worked at Fox Run Nursing Home on the memory care floor while taking her pre-requisites for nursing school. In addition to working as a CNA, she volunteered at Huron Valley Hospital, Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital and Sunrise Senior Living.
Kelsey attended Saginaw Valley State University, where she graduated on the Deans’ List with her Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) in December of 2019. While attending SVSU, she was involved in the student nursing association, had an internship in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Hurley Hospital in Flint, and in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Hospital Of Michigan.
After completing her BSN, Kelsey passed her NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) becoming a registered nurse. She accepted her first nursing position in the Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum (LDRP) unit at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital (HFWB). In the last two years at HFWB, she has received additional training becoming certified in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Maternal Fetal Triage Index (MFTI), Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work and Emotional support (STABLE) and intermediate fetal monitoring, to name a few. She has recently stepped into the leadership role as charge nurse and a nurse preceptor.
Kelsey said: “I would like to give a shout out to Dr. Marx who taught Anatomy and Physiology at Walled Lake Central HS. She helped me find my passion for healthcare and gave me the confidence and encouragement needed to move forward with nursing.”
In her personal time, she enjoys traveling, going out to eat, spending time with family, friends, and her dog, Ivy, listening to country music, being outdoors, walking, boating, skiing, shopping, Pinterest, and watching home improvement shows on HGTV.
While reflecting on her education at Walled Lake Schools, Kelsey said: “I am grateful for all the teachers I had through Walled Lake Schools that were positive role models and truly passionate about teaching. I benefitted from the opportunities and wide variety of classes and extra circular activities Walled Lake Schools had to offer. As said by Malcolm X, ‘ Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.’”
“I had many Influential teachers that shaped me into the person I am today. I would like to give a special shout out to my first grade teacher Mrs. Peterson, who had the sweetest voice, kindest sole, and most positive upbeat attitude, Mrs. Borders, who installed my passion for health, wellness and fitness; and Dr. Marx, who helped me find my passion for nursing.” Kelsey’s advice for students today is to always try your best, push yourself to do better, work hard, get involved, have a positive attitude, and be kind to others.
