Walled Lake Northern’s Lyla Turmell named State Champs! Michigan Softball Player of the Year

Walled Lake Northern star pitcher, Lyla Turmell, was named State Champs! Michigan Softball Player of the Year on Monday night. Turmell was surprised with the award at the State Champs! Turnin2 Michigan All-State Game at Carol Hutchins Stadium in Ann Arbor.

Turmell, who will play softball at the University of Toledo next season, had a senior season for the books. She went 29-2 on the year as a starting pitcher for the Knights with 259 strikeouts and a 0.913 earned run average (ERA). At the plate, she had a .542 batting average to go along with 53 runs batted in (RBI) and 12 homeruns, including one in the state championship on Saturday.

Turmell was nearly perfect in the state tournament. She held her opponents to a .110 batting average and struck out 31 batters in three games, including a pair of one-hit performances in the state semifinals and championship games.

Along with leading Walled Lake Northern to the school’s first state championship over the weekend, Turmell helped bring the Knights four-straight Lakes Valley Conference titles, three district titles and two regional titles in her four-year career as their starting pitcher.

Turmell was among four Knights that also were recognized by the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association as All-State for the 2026 season. The others were Shaela Byrnes, Aubrey Kresbaugh and Makenna Kresbaugh.
