Teacher of the Year

I teach because I feel compelled to do so as if I was destined to teach from birth! I connect with children of all ages, find joy in inspiring others to be their best, and I have an unwavering love for education, recognizing there are always new things to learn. I teach because it is who I am!

The heart of teaching lies in the profound connections formed with students. Interactions are an opportunity to inspire, support, and guide students both educationally and personally. The bond between a teacher and their students goes beyond the classroom; it's a relationship built on trust, encouragement, and mutual respect. My many years coaching volleyball have been instrumental in the relationships that I have built with my students. It's a bond that makes teaching a labor of love, where the successes and achievements of students become the ultimate source of fulfillment for me.

Teaching is the joy of witnessing those "aha" moments when a student begins to understand a concept. As a special education teacher, I get satisfaction from breaking down complex concepts into smaller parts and seeing comprehension begin. The thrill of seeing a once-confused expression shift to one of understanding is amazing.

The commitment my students show to our program inspires me to always keep growing as an educator and to be worthy as an educator and mentor of their incredible dedication. For nearly 30 years I have given the Walled Lake Central Band and now the Walled Lake Marching Band everything I have, while still maintaining the balance our culture values. I have wonderful relationships not just with students and parents but also so many of my colleagues. Teaching is a privilege that I do not take for granted. In the end it comes down to relationships, experiences, and giving students the tools to not only excel in music performance but to succeed in anything they pursue. This is why I teach.
