Early Childhood Special Education

The Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) program provides services for children ages 3 to 5 years old that are experience developmental delay(s).

The ECSC program is a 4-day-a-week, 3-hour-a-day program. All services are provided to the student in an ECSE classroom. The program is run like a typical preschool class, but many of the activities are focused and structured to help each student work on a practice the goals and objectives that are written in their Individual Education Plan (IEP). Each classroom has a special education teacher that is trained in early childhood development and teaching children with developmental delays. Placement in the ECSE programs is based on your child’s home school. Transportation is provided for these students from home to school daily.

Walled Lake Consolidated Schools uses a “Transdisciplinary Approach” in the ECSC program, which means that all staff including occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech language pathologists, paraeducators, and the teacher collaborate to deliver services. Every staff member supports the students practices all IEP goals and objectives. This approach helps children to generalize skills across all environments as services are delivered in a variety of modes by many different people within the program daily. We believe in a developmental approach, which views each child as having a unique personality and an individual rate and pattern of growth and development. The curriculum and instruction is responsive to individual differences in ability, interests, and learning styles.
