Legacy Scholarship Funds, Inc., established in May 1981, is a non-profit public charity created to provide scholarships to high school seniors going on to institutions of higher learning of their choice. It was known as Central Scholarship Funds, Inc. until May, 2007.
Legacy Scholarship Funds, Inc. is a Michigan Corporation licensed by the State Attorney General to solicit contributions from the public. It is recognized by the United States Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) public charity.
The scholarships available were created to memorialize students, coaches, and educators, as well as family members of residents of the Walled Lake and surrounding school districts. They also include scholarships established by local businesses, school retirees, athletic booster clubs, and the Walled Lake Education Association.
Scholarships for graduates of specific schools and districts presently include:

Current Scholarships
Legacy Scholarship Funds, Inc. currently manages 54 scholarships granting annual gifts to graduating high school seniors. Each scholarship seeks students with different talents and study goals. Annual dollar amounts of scholarship awards fluctuate each year based on our investment earnings. Amounts vary from $250 to more than $2,500.
Scholarship applications open on Monday, November 13, 2023 and the deadline is Friday, January 5, 2024 unless otherwise noted.
Please read the Application Instructions before applying for a scholarship as two printed copies are required to submit to your high school counselor for each application.

Community Scholarships
Wilfrid Berry Memorial
(1998) Dr. Andrew Berry created this scholarship in loving memory of his father, Wilfrid Berry. The scholarship recognizes exemplary acts of kindness. (WLC, WLN, WLW)

(1997) One of the oldest United Methodist churches in the state, the church created this scholarship to honor a graduating member of its congregation. (Church membership required)
Mitchell Karaszkiewicz Memorial
(2019) The Mitchell Karaszkiewicz Memorial Scholarship was established to honor Mitchell Karaszkiewicz who was a journeyman pipefitter and member of the United Association Local Union 636. He was a member for over 35 years and inspired both his son and son-in-law to follow him into the trade. He was always willing to help those in need and he would be happy to offer his support to the next generation of highly skilled union tradesmen. This scholarship was established by his children in order to encourage and support a graduate pursuing a trade union program or engineering. (WLC, WLN, WLW)
Gary S. Olson Memorial
(2013) This scholarship was established by the parents of Gary Olson a 1973 graduate of Mio-AuSable High School. Gary completed degrees at the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. He served the Michigan Legislature for thirty-four years, retiring as Director of the Senate Fiscal Agency. Recognizes academic achievement, Honor Society Membership, and athletic participation. (2003) The late Henry Patton II, founder of Acromag, Inc., located in Wixom, created this scholarship to honor his father who served as a medical doctor in the US Navy during WW II in the Pacific. Acromag manufactures industrial electronics equipment. The scholarship recognizes students whose parents are employed in the industrial electronics industry. Sarah Pepper Memorial
(2005) This scholarship was created by the family and friends of Sarah Pepper, a Northern H.S. parent who loved and supported the Northern H.S. Men's Soccer program. This scholarship is awarded to a male soccer player who excels in team play, sportsmanship, and tenacity. (WLN only)
Ann Kathleen Reddy Memorial
(1996) This scholarship was created by the family of Ann Kathleen Reddy, who served as a registered nurse and nurse educator all of her life. The scholarship recognizes a Farmington Hills Mercy H.S. student for scholastic achievement, community service, and a desire to enter the nursing profession. (Farmington Hills Mercy H.S. only)
Jan Schnelz Memorial
(2004) Jan Schnelz was a dedicated “Soccer Mom” who died in a tragic auto crash in 2003. Her family and friends created this scholarship to provide assistance to graduating seniors who were members of the men’s and women’s soccer teams. This scholarship recognizes leadership and responsibility, sportsmanship, positive attitudes, and dedication to the sport. (WLC, WLW)
Gale Seedorf Memorial
(1988) The family of Gale Seedorf created this scholarship in her honor following her death at the hands of a drunken driver in 1986. The scholarship recognizes scholastic achievement, interest in the fine arts, and support of racial and ethnic diversity, harmony, and civil rights. (WLC only)
Walled Lake Schools Employees Credit Union
(2004) The Walled Lake School Employees Credit Union created this scholarship at each of the Walled Lake High Schools to provide financial assistance to a graduating member of the credit union, or the graduating son/daughter of a credit union member.

WL Central Football Boosters
(1993) The Central H.S. Football Boosters Club created this scholarship to financially assist and recognize the faithful, dedicated, contributing player, who practiced hard, played hard, did his best, but did not necessarily make the headlines. WL Central Men’s Soccer Boosters
(1995) The Central H.S. Men’s Soccer Boosters created this scholarship to reward individual effort and teamwork, growing skills, and sportsmanship – all elements which support and increase interest in the high school soccer program. WL Central Women's Soccer Boosters
(2000) The Central H.S. Women’s Soccer Boosters created this scholarship to provide financial assistance to graduates who earned a varsity letter in soccer, excelled as a team player, displayed sportsmanship, and served as a role model. WL Northern Women's Basketball Boosters
(2005) The Northern H.S. Women's Basketball Boosters and friends of the basketball program created this scholarship to recognize faithful, dedicated, and contributing players who practiced hard, excelled as a team player, and demonstrated courage, discipline and confidence. WL Northern Men's Soccer Boosters
(2005) The Northern H.S. Men's Soccer Boosters created this scholarship to recognize one or more soccer team members who displayed dedication to the team, inspired their teammates, and exhibited academic and athletic balance. (WLN only)

(2005) The Northern H.S. Women's Soccer Boosters created this scholarship to recognize and reward a graduating soccer team member who exhibited dedication, sportsmanship, inspiration, respect for the game, and academic and athletic balance. (WLN Only)

WL Schools Bowling
(2004) The Walled Lake High Schools Bowling Club created this scholarship to reward one or more graduating seniors from a Walled Lake High School who have earned a varsity letter in bowling, excelled as a team player, displayed comradery, sportsmanship, dedication, and a positive attitude to the sport, along with community involvement and serving as a role model for younger players. It is NOT based upon financial need, but applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better and a strong desire to pursue studies at an accredited college, university, business school or trade school. Retired Staff Scholarships
Gregory Cleveland Choir and Performing Arts
(2018) Gregory Cleveland served as a Choir and Performing Arts teacher in the Walled Lake School District at Western High School from 1990 to 2018. He was the vocal music director, as well as the producer and head director of Western's renown musical theater productions. This scholarship recognizes two outstanding vocal music students at Western High School. (WLW only)
Harold Estep
(1988) Harold Estep served Walled Lake Schools as a science teacher and was assistant principal of Central H.S. from 1969-87. His friends created this scholarship upon his retirement. He always maintained a strong interest in the field of science education. This scholarship recognizes outstanding achievement and interest in a career in the field of science. (WLC only)
Ronald & Beverley Rentschler
(1990) Ronald & Beverley Rentschler gave over sixty-five years of service to Walled Lake Schools as teachers, counselor, and library coordinator. This scholarship was created by family and friends and recognizes a student planning a service-oriented career such as teaching, library science, nursing, or environmental sciences. (WLC, WLN, WLW)
Smith Performing Arts
(1996) Richard and Linda Smith have served as teachers in Walled Lake Schools for many years. Linda taught first grade at both Keith and Oakley Park Elementaries. Richard served as principal of both Western H.S. and Central H.S. This scholarship recognizes the outstanding performing arts student at Central H.S. (WLC only)

Joan Calhoun Memorial
(1997) This scholarship honors Joan Calhoun who taught in the Walled Lake Schools for twenty-eight years, fourteen as a Spanish teacher at Central H.S. Recognizes outstanding achievement in a world language. Awarded 2016 and in even numbered years. (WLC only)
William Calhoun Memorial
(1995) William Calhoun served as assistant principal at Western H.S. for twenty five years from 1969-1994. Upon his retirement his family and friends created this scholarship in his honor. Recognizes strong leadership in student activities at Western H.S. Awarded in 2017 and odd numbered years. (WLW only)
Floyd & Julia Chowen Memorial
(1985) This scholarship honors Floyd Chowen and his wife, Julia. Mr. Chowen served in Walled Lake Schools as a teacher and principal for twenty-nine years. Mrs. Chowen taught in the elementary schools. The scholarship recognizes achievement in science and mathematics. (WLC only)
Thomas Chrzanowski Memorial
(2004) This scholarship honors Thomas Chrzanowski, who taught in the Farmington Schools for over thirty-two years. Mr. Chrzanowski was very active in educational association activities. The scholarship recognizes distinguished service to the community. (WLC, Farmington, North Farmington H.S.)
Mike Lindstrom Memorial
(2003) Mike Lindstrom, (Mr. L), was what high school volleyball was meant to be. This beloved volleyball coach and Walled Lake Schools' teacher died suddenly in 2002. This scholarship was created by his family, students, players, parents, and colleagues and recognizes a graduating senior volleyball team member for academic achievement, sportsmanship, positive attitude, and dedication to her team. Ethel Mugler Memorial
(2000) This scholarship honors Ethel Mugler, who served Walled Lake Schools as teacher and principal for over forty years. She was instrumental in developing the Outdoor Education Program. The scholarship recognizes extra-curricular activities and environmental awareness. (WLC, WLN, WLW)
Barry Roseborough Memorial
(1994) This scholarship honors Barry Roseborough, who served as assistant superintendent for personnel in Walled Lake for many years. He worked to staff the schools with the finest teaching candidates available. The scholarship recognizes scholastic merit. (WLC, WLN, WLW)
Matthew Schumann Memorial
(2014) This scholarship honors Matthew Schumann a graduate of Michigan State University who completed his student teaching in the field of mathematics at Western H.S. He actively participated in the after school math tutoring program and founded the computer science club. Recognizes a student who has exhibited an interest in mathematics and/or education with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA. (WLW only)
John Shadford Memorial
(1996) This scholarship honors John Shadford, who served as teacher and coach at Central H.S. for over twenty-five years. His love of WLC and the Vikings was legendary. The scholarship recognizes athletics, academics, competitiveness, and sportsmanship.

Gerald Wallace Memorial
(1985) The family and friends of Gerald Wallace created this memorial scholarship to honor his sixteen years as principal of Central H.S. He had a long career in education as a teacher, coach, and administrator in the Waterford Schools. He was a founder of Legacy Scholarship Funds, Inc. (formerly known as Central Scholarships Funds, Inc.) This scholarship recognizes a student who served and contributed to his/her school and community. (WLC only)

Commerce Elementary
(1991) This scholarship was established by the families, friends, teachers, and administrators of Commerce Elementary School. Various fund-raising activities were conducted to establish this scholarship that recognizes a graduating senior from Commerce Elementary School. (Open to all Walled Lake High Schools -- Commerce Elementary Attendance Required)
Mary Helen Guest Memorial – Guest Elementary
(1997) Mary Helen Guest devoted more than fifty years to teaching in Walled Lake Schools, most of it as a kindergarten teacher at Decker Elementary. In 1997 the Board of Education honored the service and dedication of Miss Guest by re-naming Decker Elementary the Mary Helen Guest Elementary. This scholarship recognizes a graduating senior from Guest Elementary School. (Open to all Walled Lake High Schools -- Guest Elementary Attendance Required)
Keith Elementary
(2000) This scholarship was established by the families, friends, teachers, and administrators of Keith Elementary School. Many fund-raising activities supported the scholarship which recognizes a graduating senior from Keith Elementary. (Open to all Walled Lake High Schools -- Keith Elementary Attendance Required)
Clifford H. Smart Middle School
(1998) This scholarship was established by the staff, students, and parents of Clifford H. Smart Middle School to recognize a graduating senior from Smart Middle School. (Open to all Walled Lake High Schools -- Smart Middle School Attendance Required)
Walled Lake Education Association
(1992) The Walled Lake Education Association created this scholarship to provide financial aid to a graduate from each Walled Lake high school who has expressed an interest in a career as an educator. This scholarship recognizes scholarship, citizenship, perseverance, and involvement in student activities. In 2021, the Dean Smith Memorial Scholarship was merged into the WLEA scholarship. Walled Lake Northern Student Council / Pamela Sullivan Memorial
(2011) The Walled Lake Northern Student Council / Pamela J. Sullivan Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2011 by the Walled Lake Northern Student Council in memory of Pamela J. Sullivan, mother of Elizabeth Sullivan, a past president of the Walled Lake Northern Student Council. Mrs. Sullivan spent countless hours helping to make the WLN Student Council a thriving group. Recognizes leadership on the Student Council. (WLN only)

Michael Camilleri Memorial
(2013) This scholarship was created by the family and friends to honor Michael Camilleri, a member of the 2013 Class of Western High School who died in 2012. Recognizes academic achievement, receipt of a varsity athletic letter, leadership skills, positive role model, and involvement in significant community service. (WLW only)
Jamie Charles Memorial

(2004) This scholarship was created by the family, school employees and friends of James (Jamie) Charles who died in 2002. This scholarship recognizes good attitude, good citizenship, community involvement, friendship, and sportsmanship by a graduating senior at Oxford H.S. Sean Collins Memorial
(2016) This scholarship honors Sean Collins, a member of the Class of 2017 of Central High School who lost his life in a tragic swimming accident in 2016. Recognizes an outstanding Central graduate who has demonstrated interest, talent and a desire to pursue additional studies in vocal music and theatre. Emphasis is also placed upon friendships and community involvement. (WLC only)
Jennifer Dahlmann Schwartz Memorial
(2005) This scholarship honors Jennifer Dahlmann Schwartz, Class of ’89 Central H.S. and graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago who worked for the GAP Corporation as a head fashion designer. Her family and friends created this scholarship to recognize an outstanding student in the arts. (WLC, WLN, WLW)
John Drypen Memorial
(2009) This scholarship was created to honor John Drypen, a member of the Class of 2000 Central High School, who died from cancer in 2005. The scholarship recognizes a student who has maintained a 2.5 GPA, is well liked by his/her peers, enjoys and participates in sports, and has overcome a life-threatening illness or life-altering experience. David Dursi Memorial/Class of ‘87
(1987) This scholarship honors David Dursi, a member of the Class of ’87 Central H.S., who died in an auto accident in 1986. The scholarship recognizes good attitude, citizenship, commitment and sportsmanship. (WLC only)
Friedl Family Memorial
(2016) This scholarship was originally established in memory of Scott W. Friedl, a 1975 Central High School graduate, by family and friends to provide financial assistance to a graduating senior from one or more the Walled Lake Schools high schools to further her/his education in the medical/research field. Two and a half years later, Scott's father, Walter C. Friedl, passed away after a 16 year journey with Parkinson's Disease. (WLC, WLN, WLW)
Joey Guckian Memorial
(2008) This scholarship was created by the family and friends of Joseph (Joey) Guckian and the students and staff of Community High School to honor the memory of Joey, a member of the '07 Class of Community H.S. who lost his life in a motorcycle accident in 2007. Recognizes overcoming obstacles, optimism, caring, and "giving back" to the community. (WLN only)
Heritage Memorial
(1996) This combined scholarship honors several area residents. Included are the funds of the Florkowski, Cwikiel, Lokuta, Schneider, Carlson, McGee, and Dean Smith families as well as Central H.S. alumni. The scholarship recognizes improved scholarship, attitude, and ambition. (WLC, WLN, WLW)
Chris Lampe Memorial
(1981) The first LSF scholarship was created to honor Chris Lampe, a Central H.S. student who died while running in a gym class. Seth and Pat Lampe founded Central Scholarship Funds, Inc. (now known as Legacy Scholarships Funds, Inc.) The scholarship recognizes academics, citizenship, and perseverance. Prospective applicants must plan on attending Hillsdale College in Michigan. Chris McFarlane Class of '93 Memorial
(2017) The purpose of this scholarship shall be “to provide scholarship assistance to a Walled Lake Central High School graduating student athlete in good academic standing who has been recognized as an individual that has demonstrated the ability and desire to succeed at an institution of higher learning, while exhibiting good sportsmanship, a positive attitude, and a strong work ethic. Angela Martin Memorial
(2018) This scholarship was created by friends, family and community supporters to honor Angela Martin, a member of the graduating class of 2007 at Walled Lake Central. Angela died in July 2014 at the young age of 25 from an accidental opioid overdose. This scholarship recognizes a graduating Walled Lake School District student who has overcome a hardship or obstacle in their lifetime and wishes to further continue their education. (WLC, WLN, WLW)

Jonathan Day Perry Memorial
(1995) The purpose of this scholarship shall be to provide scholarship assistance to one graduate of either Walled Lake Central/Northern/Western High Schools. The recipient must demonstrate integrity, good citizenship, dedication to learning and be a member of the National Honor Society. The student must have been an active participant in the Model United Nations, journalism or forensics (debate), or demonstrate a desire to pursue studies at an accredited college or university, leading to a career in law, government or public service. Tyler Richards Memorial
(2005) This scholarship honors Tyler Richards, a member of the class of 2005 Northern H.S., who died in an auto accident in 2003. The scholarship recognizes Northern H.S graduates who best exemplify the qualities of Tyler Richards--kindness, friendship, and love of life. (WLN only)
John Sebold Memorial
(2002) The scholarship honors John Sebold, Class of ’78 Central H.S. and Ferris State graduate of the construction management program. The family construction company operates in the metro Detroit area. The scholarship recognizes a student who displays a commitment to serving others (in school, the community, or at home), exhibits a strong work ethic, leadership qualities, and demonstrates a financial need. Robin J. Shapiro Memorial
(1994) This scholarship honors Robin Shapiro, a member of the Class of ’94 Central H.S., who died in an auto accident in 1991. The scholarship recognizes special services student achievement. (WLC only)
Shannon Sturgeon Memorial
(1994) This scholarship honors Shannon Sturgeon, a member of the Class of ’94 Western H.S., who died in an auto accident in 1993. The scholarship recognizes one or more female graduates of WLW who intend to pursue studies at an accredited community college, four-year college or university. Candidates must have participated at some time during their high school years in girls cross country, track or skiing, and should demonstrate good academic achievement, commitment, friendship and sportsmanship, and to some extent exhibit a financial need. Taylor J. Tannous Memorial
(2016) This scholarship was created to honor Taylor Tannous, a 2008 graduate of Northern High School who lost his life in an auto accident in 2016. Recognizes young men who demonstrate a passion for water polo (WLC/WLN/WLW) and/or a member of the WLN Men's Swim Team. Applicant must exhibit loyalty to his team and the ability to overcome challenging situations with strength, determination and courage. (WLC, WLN, WLW)
